Ever just find something that works and you just can't wait to share it! Well, I love my BRAVO table team classroom management system and am celebrating my love of it with another FREEBIE!
I've tried a couple of different small group/table team management systems and this is by far my most favorite system for first grade! I first saw the idea of a BRAVO board from the fantastic Cara Carroll (see her board and post here), but have made some adaptions for my own classroom. I'm finally realizing (it only took 3 years... :) that as much as I enjoy creating/drawing charts on paper, it not only takes a lot of time, but it also then takes FOREVER to recreate it if it ends up getting ruined or faded with use. And let's just be honest, time is so precious and with so many things on the to-do list, it's important to prioritize! So, goodbye markers and paper and hello computer and printer! The techy route for anchor charts and posters in my classroom allows me to just hit Control+print and I have a brand new and fresh chart ready to go! It also allows me to be able to easily edit and adjust as I reflect on my lessons and classroom procedures. Anyways, enough of my "I heart making things on the computer spiel" and back to the BRAVO system... :)
I love the BRAVO system for a couple of reasons:
-it uses tallies to keep track of points, which allows me to model how to use tally points in a natural way and in doing so I'm integrating standards into even my management (can I get a woohoo here!)
-it promotes team work and fosters collaboration between students
-it rewards students for making good choices with fun rewards that don't cost you anything
-it's an easy system to manage and maintain
Here's how it works:
I keep my bravo board at the front of the room on my chalk board. I made my board by printing (oh computer how I love thee!) and cutting out the BRAVO heading and table numbers:
I then laminated them and glued them to a small white board I had in my room:
I then used magnets on the back of the board to keep it up on my front chalkboard.
Then all I have to do to give a point is use a dry erase marker, which is easy to clean off at the end of the week.
Each grouping of tables in my room has a number. I use this number not only for keeping track of table points, but also for calling students to line up or come to the carpet. For example, I might say if your table is an odd number come to the carpet, or if you are equal to 3+1 please come to the carpet, or if you number is spelled o-n-e come to the carpet. Again naturally integrating standards and review into my management! I'm a big fan of integration if you can't tell! :)
Tables can get points for:
-being the first table ready to transition
-staying focused and working hard at their seats
-working together kindly on group/partner work
We start with a blank board at the beginning of the week and keep track of points all week long. The team with the most points at the end of the week gets a BRAVO coupon. There are many ways to use these coupons, but I'll share how I use them.
I currently have five different BRAVO coupon rewards:
1. wear slippers at school
2. bring in one item for show and tell
3. wear a hat
4. bring in one stuffed animal to read to
5. a blank one for you to write in your own reward
The table that wins gets to decide on which one of the rewards they want. They then take the coupon home on Friday for their family to see and get to enjoy their reward on Monday. For example, if a table picks the wear slippers at school coupon, they bring in slippers and get to wear them all day on Monday!
