Zero the Hero Freebie!

We are in full swing in first grade! It's hard to believe that we will already be celebrating our 10th day of school on Tuesday! The tenth day of school is the perfect time to introduce ZERO THE HERO!

I don't know about you, but I love making learning engaging and fun, so when I heard about Zero the Hero (thanks to Pinterest and my wonderful grade level partner), I just knew that I had to introduce my kiddos to him. They are going to eat him up and what I love even more is that ultimately it helps them learn and understand the importance of zero!

After introducing Zero the Hero with this CUTE video (I really want to get my hands on the book too!!):

I'm planning on having students look at the hundreds chart to find all of the places that Zero the Hero shows up. We will color in the numbers and then identify the pattern: that he appears every 10 numbers. We'll practice counting by tens, practice spelling and writing the number and word zero, and also discuss the tens and ones place value, since this is the first time we have a number in the tens place!

I love to use motion, movement, and songs in my learning and I found this great Zero the Hero song from Heidi Songs that I plan on teaching my kids:

The song can be purchased from her website by clicking here.

As an extension activity, we'll finish up by making our very own Zero the Hero from my Zero the Hero Craftivity packet on teacherspayteachers.

And to celebrate the first 10 tens of school, I'm offering it for FREE!! Click here to download your free copy!

What are you doing to celebrate the 10th day of school?

  2. WOW Bec! I'm impressed! I LOVE that you're offering your craftivity for free in honor of the 10th day of school! How fun!! Sorry I'm just now becoming a follower. For some reason I thought I already was one. Man was I missing out! You are one step closer to letting the world see the beauty of your gestures and songs! I can't wait for it to be unveiled!
