A Fancy Party Celebrating Y as Long E!

Who doesn't love a party? The big talk in first grade is always about going to friends' birthday parties! Well last year I decided to throw a party in honor of Fancy Y!

Didn't you know that Y becomes a fancy letter when it sounds like e at the end of a two syllable word?!

Of course, no party can begin without a formal invitation! So before I taught the y spelling pattern for long e I sent out a formal invitation to each of my kiddos:

This built up so much excitement for fancy y! Even my boys got into it! I cannot tell you how CUTE the kids were when they arrived all decked out in fancy clothes. One of my girls wore her old flower girl dress and I even had boys in ties and one come in a suit (his mom said that he begged to wear it!)

To start our fancy party, I began by reading Fancy Nancy. I told the kids that it was Fancy Y's favorite book, so we read it looking for fancy y words.

I also gathered other Fancy Nancy books to keep in our library for the week for the students to read:

We did lots of fun and fancy activities to celebrate Fancy Y: a tasty pastry room hunt, a starry class game to identify fancy words, and we even made a classy book of fancy words!
My kids LOVED adding to our classy book! I put it in our classroom library so that they could enjoy reading it.

I'm so excited to get to throw another fancy party this year celebrating y as long e! If you want to throw a fancy party too, I've uploaded my entire unit that provides everything you need to throw your very own Fancy Y party! You can purchase it on my Teachers Pay Teachers page {here}.

In celebration of Fancy Y, I will give this unit away for FREE to the first 2 people who comment on this post! Be sure to leave your email address!
