Frozen E ~ a Magical way to teach CVCe

It's been snowing here all day, which gave us snow day 3 for this year! Crazy when the last 2 years have been snow day free. I think we are making up for it all at one time!

I do have to admit that I love snow when I can stay at home and watch it from the comfort of our warm house. Being out driving in the snow-it's on my list of 10 ten least favorite things to do. Like I almost didn't make it to work in one piece last week thanks to an unexpected early morning snow, a ginormous snow covered mountain hill and a too-close-to-my-bumper snow plow. True story.

But I digress. Snow! I love it (when I'm not driving in it... ;), my kids love it and it's the perfect time of year to embrace it and bring it to life in our classrooms! I spent today putting some finishing touches on my newest creation:
I have some precious kiddos struggling with those tricky CVCe words and was trying to think of a way to help them understand how it works. My kids really connect with "friends" or stories to learn things, so I created Frozen E! I will be introducing them to him this week (if it stops snowing... :) and I am SO excited for them to meet him!

Here's how I plan to introduce him:

A box with a caution label will magically arrive in our classroom this week. I will ham it up and act surprised--like what in the world could be in that box? Students will get to open up the box and will discover our new friend Frozen E amidst some snowballs (cotton balls), a letter from Frozen E, and some Frozen E word building cards for us to use as a class to see how his magic works!
In the letter Frozen E will tell us to learn his favorite song so that we can remember what he does to words. The song will be the Frozen E song that I created. You can learn it and watch it here! The lyrics are in the unit!

I create lots of songs and one of my best friends has been begging me to record them and share them with you. This is my second adventure at it and let's all be honest--who likes seeing themselves on video?! Who's with me? Lol So, I guess what I'm saying is if you like this one and would like to see more song/videos leave me some warm fuzzy comment love! :)

After we learn about how Frozen E works, I have created some "cool" activities and centers that we will be using all week (and longer!) to continue learning and reinforcing CVCe words. There are centers, class games, intervention activities, and printables. I'm telling you this CVCe unit is packed full of magical goodness!

Altogether his Frozen e CVCe unit includes:

*a fun whole group introduction to Frozen e with instructions to make a Frozen e box that will hold the Frozen e wand, letter from frozen e, and frozen e cards to build Frozen e words together as a group (to see his magical powers at work)

*Frozen E song and poster (includes a link to the song on video to learn the lyrics and gestures)

*Frozen E wands for both the teacher and students (in color and black and white)

*Frozen Fort Room Hunt with 12 CVCe cards and recording sheet

*Beat the Heat CVCe game for class review or centers

*Fake or Flake Real or Nonsense Words Sort with CVCe word cards, sorting mats, and recording sheet

*Build a Snowman CVCe matching game with word/picture cards and recording sheet

*Freeze It Center with 12 CVC words that students "freeze" into CVCe words; includes recording sheet

*Make It CVCe word building mats (both in color and black and white) and CVCe cards for extra practice and intervention

*Frozen e Printables (in black and white)

And I've put this packet on sale for 50% off for the next 24 hours!! That's makes it only $3.00 for 70 pages of some Frozen CVCe fun!!

And of course, the first 2 people to tell me their favorite snow activity and leave me their email addy will get this unit for free!

Happy Snow Day! Stay warm if you're in a snowy place!!

  10. Just purchased your unit and, of course, was listening to your song. Thanks for being brave enough to record and post! It really 'makes' the lesson and I'd be lost without the recording to get me started. Your have a lovely voice and great ideas ~ so please DO keep 'em coming! :)
