It's February 5 which means it's time for this month's I'm Lovin' Daily 5 on the Fifth linky party!!
This linky party is hosted here on the 5th of each month so feel free to join in as we learn and grow together!
We had a little unplanned vacay in January (where did that month go?) but we are BACK and my plan for this month's post is about ways to spice up Read to Self, but first, I have to begin with:
Do not go past go, do not collect $200
I can't stress enough about the value of getting and reading the Daily 5 book:

This book by the 2 Sisters is a must have for doing the Daily 5!!
And have you heard? They just came out with a second book too!!

Ok-now on to ways to spice up Read to Self!
My students LOVE Daily 5 and they really LOVE to read, but we all need some extra pazazz!
Now don't get my wrong--my students have stamina and they do a good job at read to self, but when you're competing with things like word work, writing, and listening that change frequently and offer new and exciting options. Well, sometimes Read to Self needs something new. We are all creatures of habit and I'm all for a routine, but sometimes we need a change-something to re-spark our excitement.
Here are a few ways that I like to spice up Read to Self:
1. Finger Puppet Readers
Here are a few ways that I like to spice up Read to Self:
1. Finger Puppet Readers
When spring fever hit last year, I pulled out these Googly Eye Finger puppets and the kids couldn't wait to do Daily 5! They just slip them on their pointer finger and use the googly eyes to read their books! LOVE!
You can get a dozen googly eyes on Amazon.com for around $5! Need an inexpensive and easy to implement spice up Read to Self? Click HERE or on the picture above to check them out!
2. Read at the Teacher's Desk
Clipart and Font thanks to Miss Tina, KPM Doodles, and JW Illustrations
Do you know how motivating it is to sit at the teacher's desk! Seriously--who knew? :) My students can earn these reward coupons and they work so hard to get them! This is one of the coupons out of 7 reward coupons that I made a couple of years ago and still use today! I printed them and laminated them so that they can be reused over and over again. 3. Change your book selection
Who doesn't love knowing that they are getting to read NEW books? My kids do and let's be honest, we all love getting our hands on new things too! :) It happens to me every time Melonheadz creates a new clipart set! Can I get an amen? #clipartaddict
Even though my students get to choose the books they read in their reading book bags and even though their good fit book level changes as the year goes on, they still LOVE (like big puffy heart LOVE) when I put out a new bin of books. I have a "teacher cabinet" of read alouds books or books that don't go into my student's library. I pull out some books from my "teacher cabinet" (seriously, the kids oh and aw everytime I do this!) and keep them in a designated spot in my room. It's just one book bin in my room that is a series of books or are books from the same author that the students can choose to pick from and read during Read to Self. These are not books that go in their book bags. These are books that they can borrow from the special bin and use only during Read to Self.
Currently, my kids are EATING UP Fly Guy books! And why wouldn't they? We all love Fly Guy!
Soon I'll be pulling out my stash of Dr. Seuss books, which my students love every year!!

4. Make it Comfy
I don't know about you, but when I read I like to be comfy! Bring on the soft blanket, cue the snow falling, and hear the tea pot whistle--I'm ready to read! :) lol Ok-I can't quite pull that off in the classroom, but I do like to have some carpets and pillows that students can pick up and take to their spots:
How's your Daily 5 going? I'd love to hear about it and have you join in this month's linky party!!
