It's November 5 which means it's time for this month's I'm Lovin' Daily 5 on the Fifth linky party!!
This linky party is hosted here on the 5th of each month so feel free to join in as we learn and grow together!
My plan for this month's post is to discuss a casserole style serving (a little of this, and a little of that) of some Daily 5 goodies and a FREEBIE too, but first, I have to begin with:
Do not go past go, do not collect $200
I can't stress enough about the value of getting and reading the Daily 5 book:
Click HERE or on the cover to get the book!
This book by the 2 Sisters is a must have for doing the Daily 5!!
Ok-now on to a healthy helping of Daily 5 casserole!
So if you follow me, you know that it's not a new thing for me to like to be organized! Someone say type A personality? Yes please! :)
One of my favorite things about the Daily 5 is teaching students about good fit books (see the post HERE about how I introduce good fit books and to snag a good fit freebie poster too!)
It's so important for students to know their good fit book (aka-leveled reading book), but I never could figure out a good way to have them track their own progress and have them remember their letter. A teacher can only hear, "wait, so what's my good fit letter?" so many times before a child goes book before going batty. Soooo...after many nights of hamster brain (you know the teacher wheels that spin when you're out of your mind exhausted but can't sleep a wink even though sweet hubby is on the second forest of logs being cut :) Truly all kinds of great ideas come from my hamster brain, teacher insomnia nights! So I really just need to embrace them because they eventually bring ideas like this one:
Reading Folders! Seriously, why didn't I think of this before? I mean I use them for take home books but why not use them in the classroom during Daily 5/center time?! Why yes-I think I shall!
Plus these reading folders solved another organization dilemma--where do my students store all of these AWESOME tools I use and want them to have while they are doing read to self? Yet I don't want them to get crumpled and ruined in the bottomless pit called their book bags.
The Reading Folder is a perfect home for resources in like:
Sarah Cooley's (First Grader at Last) amazing Dolch Word Sticker Book (found HERE)
Lyndsey Kuster's (A Year of Many Firsts) ingenious Mr. Check In bookmark (a fantabulabous FREEBIE found HERE!)
Lisa Mattes' (Growing Firsties) Beanie Baby Reading Strategy Bookmark (another stupendous FREEBIE found HERE!)
Oh, how I do LOVE when things work out so nicely! During conferencing, I just tell my students when they have moved up a "size" in their good fit books. They circle their "size" (aka level of book on their independent reading level) and cross off their old sizes (so as not to get confused and come back with those, "wait, what is my good fit book?" questions again!). They keep this reading folder in their book bags with all of their good fit books for read to self! I LOVE it and so do my kiddos!! Plus it's another way to streamline and organize things! Which, you know makes my little heart skip a beat!
I love my reading folders much that I want to share them with you! Now incase you don't use the Guided Reading leveling of books, have no fear! I have included a blank copy for you to write in your own levels! And so as to not leave the boys out, I have a copy for the boys and a copy for the girls that I use!
Also, in true casserole style, I'm throwing in a little extra helping of Sarah Cooley's Sight Word Sticker books:
Click HERE or on the picture to check out these sight word sticker books!
My students love practicing their sight words as a part of their read to self time and they are more excited than a camel on hump day to get a new sticker for their book! Research has shown that if a student knows a word three consecutive times in a row then they *should* have it! So when I track my students sight words, they get a different color star next to the word each time when they get it correct. After 3 stars in a row, they then get a sticker! When they have filled up a book with stickers, they get to get the next book of words (this is also great for differentiation!)! You would think I was giving out gold to my kids-truly! The love this and I have seen SO much growth in their sight word knowledge! I use these sight word graphs to track their growth. They color them in themselves-this allows not only for great math integration, but also for their confidence to grow as the SEE their growth! I believe that every accomplishment is worth celebrating and this has been such an exciting way to track and celebrate growth!

Now before we go, I'm giving one last helping of goodness by giving away one of my students FAVORITE Word Work centers: Play Dough Sight Word Mats!
Just leave your name and email address in the comments and I'll pick one winner this weekend to win this bundle!

Wow! I've never been first in line before! I love your system to help your kids keep up with their level. The Sight Word Sticker books look like such a motivating resource. My hamster time is going over everyone else's take on Daily 5 to find inspirations for my own class.
