So did Mother's Day sneak up on any one else? Can I still pull the "I just moved" card to explain why we only started making these on Monday! Yikes! Regardless, my kids are LOVING making these for their moms this year:
They've been talking about it everyday in class-about how they are so excited to get to take them home on Friday and give them to their moms! They come in and ask: when are we going to work on them? LOVE!
We started off on Monday by reading the book The Mothers Day Mice by Eve Bunting. (adorable story!)
We talked about how just like the mice did in the story, we are also going to give a gift of love to our moms for Mother's Day. We used the bubble maps below to brainstorm why our moms/grandmas are so great!
*Sidenote--I like to give the option on Mothers Day and Fathers Day for students to do their moms or grandmas/dads or grandpas.
Today we then read the book I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff (Hilarious book! Makes me laugh every.single.time I read it!)
Even though it wasn't a Mothers Day book, I used it to talk about persuasive writing (a perfect tie in with this craftivity!) We discussed how Alex, in the story, gives reasons as to why he should have an iguana. I then told the students that in order to give their mom/grandma the Mother of the Year Award, they were going to have to persuade/give some reasons as to why their mom deserves the award. We referenced back to the the bubble maps from Monday and then my kiddos got busy to work filling out the prewriting 3 circle graphic organizers show above in the graphic organizer pic. Forgot to snap some pics, but they were working so hard and were oh.so.proud of their moms and grandmas. Made my heart smile!
Tomorrow we are going to turn our prewriting 3 circle graphic organizer into sentences on the ruled writing paper:
We'll put our finishing touches on it on Thursday and then assemble our craft for it to be ready to go home on Friday! (fingers crossed... ;)
Since my class is still working on them, I don't have any finished ones from this year, but here are a few of the ones my kiddos made last year. (Please note that in my packet I have updated the design of them since last year, but I still love how they turned out! I especially love that having students use their hands for the ribbon part adds such a personal touch!)
